Nomination of Professor Dr. Emil Mosonyi
Nomination of Professor Dr. Emil Mosonyi for including him into the list of the 60 most influential people in the hydro power industry of the world based on his activity in Hungary and abroad
Only few messages raised me so great pleasure as the announcement on Professor Dr. Emil Mosonyi, member of Hungarian Academy of Sciences, at his age 95 years, being given the highest award of Hungary for scientists, the Széchenyi Award (descendant of earlier State Award) for his life-work. The Hungarian society of engineer’s has been waiting for this award, behoving my Emil brother, a long time. He was a world -renowned hydro expert, and his books on hydro power development were accepted as a compulsory basis of university education in China. Unfortunately, because of his illness he was not able to participate in the Hungarian Parliament on the award ceremony and he asked me to take the Széchenyi Award on his behalf. This is why I feel my making the nomination is justified.
Professor Dr. Emil Mosonyi deserved the high state award for his hydro activity in Hungary also. This is supported by the following facts:
From 1936 as the young engineer, he started to work on the irrigation problems of East-Hungary, Tisza and Körös Valley. The elaboration of the Tiszalök Barrage plan and its responsible realization changed the arid region into breedy. Under his proposal, additionally the hydro power plant with three hydraulic turbine-generator units, 3.8 MW installed capacity each, were included into the barrage scheme..
As the logical continuation of utilization of the Tisza River, after the Tiszalök Barrage, the planning, and implementation of Kisköre and Csongrád Barrages were completed based on the general principles of Professor Mosonyi.
The conceptual design of Nagymarosi Barrage on Danube River was also elaborated by Professor Mosonyi, still in 1942, in the age of Horthy. The hydro power development in this project is a by-product of meeting the intensive navigation demand of countries along the Danube River during all seasons of the years. The project is the regional unit of Danube river navigation from Kelheim in Germany to the Black sea.
Professor Mosonyi in 1956 was one of the most popular teachers of Budapest Technical University. He was beloved by all at his consulting engineering company also. Due to his popularity he was elected for chairman of Revolution Committee in the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Therefore he fell into disgrace with the political force. He was degraded from professoriate and was moved also from position of directorate of his consulting engineering company VIZITERV.
Because of this degrading situation Professor Mosonyi decided to leave Hungary. He was proposed the leading professoriate of University of Karlsruhe that he accepted. His professional activity brought a world wide acknowledgement both for Professor Mosonyi and for University of Karlsruhe. His expertise was accepted also by many governments in the world. He was elected by several well known universities for honorary doctor and for chairman of several acknowledged international hydro organisations.
In his highly appreciated home country, he unfortunately got only discreditable attacks. The Széchenyi Award, delivered to him at his age of 95 years, maybe a balm for it. I think that, based on the above, his award is not criticisable even from political point of view.
I believe that the above written facts justify my nomination.
